German SummaryEine Ehe wird geschieden, ein Geschwisterpaar getrennt. Die 16jährige Tochter, genannt Maskottchen, wurde dem Vater, er 11jährige Junge der Mutter zugesprochen. Für beide Eltern ist damit die Situation entschieden, sie sind neue Bindungen eingegangen. Doch die Kinder wollen sich mit der Trennung nicht abfinden. Sie haben sich geschworen, mit allen Miteln den alten Zustand wiederherzustellen. Maskottchen versucht es zunächst mit Bitten und Apellen an die Eltern. Der Junge dagegen tut sich mit einem Leidensgenossen zusammen - sie wollen gemeinsam fortgehen und machen, um sich mit den nötigen Utensilien zu versorgen, einen Kaufhausdiebstahl. Während der Freund ausreißen kann kommt der Junge auf Antrag der Mutter ins Erziehungsheim. Masskottchen sieht, wie ihr Bruder leidet, und versucht ihn dort herauszuholen. Doch sie ist minderjährig und darf keine Erzieherfunktion übernehmen, bekommt nicht einmal eien eigenen Wohnraum. Darum verstecken sich die Geschwister - Maskottchen hat dem Bruder zuliebe die Schule aufgegeben - mal hier, mal dort, im Arbeiterwohnheim, im Schuppen einer Gärtnerei, wo Maskottchen sich Arbeit gesucht hat. Es geht ihnen für kurze Zeit etwas besser als das Mädchen sich bereit erklärt, mt dem Gärtner zu schlafen. Doch sie kann sich nicht ganz verkaufen, und als ihr Bruder ihr Opfer nicht achtet, sie vielmehr beschimpft, geht sie schließlich zum Vater zurück. Der Junge wird von der Polizei aufgegriffen und ins Heim zurückgebracht. - Eines Tages versucht nocheinmal ihm zur Flucht zu verhelfen. Dabei verunglückt sie tötlich.

English SummaryA marriage is divorced, a sibling couple separated. The 16-year-old daughter, called mascot, was awarded to the father, the 11-year-old boy to the mother. The situation is thus decided for both parents, they have entered into new relationships. But the children do not want to resign themselves to the separation. They have sworn to restore the old condition with all their means. Mascot first tries it with petitions and appeals to the parents. The boy, on the other hand, joins up with a fellow sufferer - they want to leave together and make a theft of a department store in order to provide themselves with the necessary utensils. While the boyfriend can run away, the boy comes at the mother's request to the reform school. Mascot sees her brother suffering and tries to get him out of there. But she is a minor and is not allowed to take on any role as an educator, she does not even get her own living space. That's why the siblings are hiding - mascots have given up school for their brother's sake - sometimes here, sometimes there, in the workers' hostel, in the shed of a nursery where mascots have sought work. For a short time they feel a little better as the girl agrees to sleep with the gardener. But she can't sell herself completely, and when her brother doesn't respect her victim, rather insults her, she finally goes back to her father. The boy is picked up by the police and taken back to the home. - One day he tries again to help him escape. She is killed in an accident.
