German Summary1918 in Ungarn. In den letzten Kriegstagen steht Balint Fabian, ein armer Bauer, der jetzt im Soldatenrock steckt, vor einer schweren Entscheidung. Um selbst überleben zu können, ersticht er mit dem Bajonett einen gegnerischen Soldaten. Wofür er eigentlich kämpft, weiß er nicht. Er ist von den Herren in den Krieg geschickt worden, also ist er gegangen. Jetzt kehrt er zurück in sein Dorf, zur Frau und den beiden Söhnen. Doch hier ist inzwischen etwas vorgefallen, die Frau ist gealtert und geistig verwirrt. Die Söhne sprechen sich nicht aus. Balint sucht und findet Arbeit beim Gutsbesitzer als Paradekutscher. Das Jahr 1919 bricht an, und auch in das kleine nordungarische Dorf dringt die Kunde vom Aufstand der Armeen gegen die Obrigkeit. Balint begreift nicht, was vor sicht geht. Der Sohn eines armen Bauern läuft im Dorf umher und erzählt vom Aufbruch in eine neue Zeit. Aber was das für eine Zeit sein soll, kann sich keiner so richtig vorstellen. Nach dem Sturz der Räterrepublik werden die sich inzwischen formierten Aufständischen verhaftet und zur Hinrichtung in die Stadt gebracht. Der Gutsverwalter veranlasst den Baron die verhafteten Bauern zu retten, da sie arbeitswillige Knechte sein werden, zum Dank dafür. Der Baron fährt mit seinem Paradekutscher Fabian in die Stadt und bringt die Bauern, an seine Kutsche angebunden, zurück. Die Gefesselten flehen Balint an, langsam zu fahren und sie nicht zu Tode zu schinden.
English Summary1918 in Hungary. In the last days of the war, Balint Fabian, a poor farmer now in a soldier's skirt, is faced with a difficult decision. In order to survive, he uses the bayonet to stab an enemy soldier. What he's actually fighting for, he doesn't know. He was sent to war by the gentlemen, so he left. Now he returns to his village, to the wife and the two sons. But something has happened here in the meantime, the woman has aged and is mentally confused. The sons don't talk. Balint looks for and finds work with the manor owner as a parade coachman. The year 1919 dawned, and also in the small North Hungarian village the news of the uprising of the armies against the authorities penetrated. Balint doesn't understand what's going on. The son of a poor farmer walks around the village and tells of the dawn of a new era. But nobody can really imagine what kind of a time it is. After the fall of the Räterrepublik, the insurgents who had formed themselves in the meantime were arrested and brought to the city for execution. The administrator of the estate prompts the Baron to save the farmers who had been arrested, as they would be servants willing to work, in gratitude for this. The Baron drives into town with his parade coachman Fabian and brings the farmers back, tied to his carriage. The tied ones implore Balint to drive slowly and not to kill them.
