German SummaryIm Mittelpunkt steht der Arbeitersportler Richard Bertram, dessen Gestalt biographische Züge Werner Seelenbinders trägt. Bereits Ende der zwanziger Jahre sind die linken Arbeitersportvereine Repressalien ausgesetzt und werden von SA-Gruppen überfallen. Einer der Sportler, Erich Sens, läuft zu diesen über. Richards Erfolg stört die neuen Machthaber, denen seine politische Haltung bekannt ist, und sie suchen einen Anlaß, ihn zu sperren. Er gibt ihn, als er bei der Siegerehrung zur deutschen Meisterschaft den Hitlergruß verweigert. Anläßlich der Olympiade will Deutschland auf den potentiellen Medaillengewinner aber nicht verzichten und hebt die Sperre auf. Richard nutzt im Auftrag der Kommunistischen Partei die Verbindung zu den ausländischen Sportlern, um Material über Konzentrationslager ins Ausland zu schleusen. Es gibt zwar wieder einen Verräter, aber Richard, seiner Freundin Lilly und den anderen gelingt es, die Nazis zu überlisten.

Already in the late twenties the left-wing workers' sports clubs were subjected to reprisals and attacked by SA groups. One of the athletes, Erich Sens, runs over to these. After Hitler came to power, Richard and his friend Alli went to a bourgeois association to camouflage their illegal activities. Richard's success disturbs the new rulers, who are aware of his political stance, and they seek a reason to block him. He gives it when he refuses the Hitler salute at the award ceremony for the German championship. On the occasion of the Olympics, however, Germany does not want to do without the potential medal winner and lifts the ban. Richard, on behalf of the Communist Party, uses the connection to foreign athletes to smuggle material abroad via concentration camps. There is another traitor, but Richard, his girlfriend Lilly and the others manage to outwit the Nazis.
