German SummaryIrgendwo in der Wüste von Turkmenistan steht einsam ein Baum. Er wurde von Dshamal gepflanzt. Voller Stolz wird er den Arbeitern gezeigt, die gekommen sind, um einen Kanal zu bauen, der Wasser in diese Wüste bringen soll. Schon einmal wurde dieser Kanal geplant, doch der Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges stoppte dieses Vorhaben. Auch Dshamals Mann, der Hirte Nasar, musste an die Front. Dshamal muss nun nicht nur alleine für die Kinder sorgen, sondern sie übernimmt auch wie selbstverständlich die riesige Schafherde des Kolchos. Zu alledem wird sie von einem Hirten des Nachbarkolchos belästigt, den sie der Lüge überführt hat. Als Nasar als Krüppel aus dem Krieg heimkehrt, werden ihm böse Gerüchte über seine Frau zugetragen. Lange Zeit können die Eheleute, die früher in großer Eintracht gelebt hatten, nicht zueinander finden. Endlich erweist sich, dass die Gerüchte jeglicher Grundlage entbehren. Es kommt zu einer handgreiflichen Auseinandersetzung zwischen Nasar und dem anderen Hirten, in Folge derer Dshamal Opfer eines tragischen Unfalls wird, als sie ihrem Mann das Leben rettet. Unaufhaltsam bahnt sich das Wasser des Kanals, der – auch mit Hilfe Dshamals – inzwischen gebaut wurde, seinen Weg durch die Wüste zum Baum von Dshamal...

English SummarySomewhere in the desert of Turkmenistan there is a lonely tree. It was planted by Dshamal. He is proudly shown to the workers who have come to build a canal to bring water into this desert. This canal was planned once before, but the outbreak of the Second World War stopped this project. Dshamal's husband, the shepherd Nasar, also had to go to the front. The water of the canal, which was built in the meantime - also with the help of Dshamal - makes its way unstoppably through the desert to the tree of Dshamal...
