German SummaryDie ehemalige Schwimmerin und Leistungssportlerin Barbara ist ihrem Mann Herbert, einem Mathematiker, in die kleine Stadt Ergsleben gefolgt. Im ansässigen Textilbetrieb hat sie sich schnell zur Facharbeiterin und Meisterin qualifiziert. Sie stellt an sich und andere hohe Anforderungen, Leistung ist auch hier ihre Devise. Sie kämpft um neue Arbeits- und Ausbildungsmethoden und hat sogar den Bau einer werkseigenen Schwimmhalle durchgesetzt. Ihre hohen Maßstäbe setzt sie auch an Herbert an, der ihnen aber nicht gewachsen ist. Er verheimlicht Barbara lange Zeit, daß sein Rechenzentrum wegrationalisiert wurde und er eine ihn nicht befriedigende Tätigkeit ausüben muß. Und er hat ein Verhältnis mit seiner Sekretärin, was Barbara erfährt, als diese im 7. Monat schwanger ist. Nach der Scheidung trägt Barbara sich mit dem Gedenken wegzugehen und ein Angebot als Schwimmtrainerin anzunehmen. Aber sie entscheidet sich dann doch, ihren Verpflichtungen im Betrieb und den Menschen gegenüber, die sie brauchen, nachzukommen.

English SummaryThe former swimmer and competitive athlete Barbara followed her husband Herbert, a mathematician, to the small town of Ergsleben. In the local textile company she quickly qualified as a skilled worker and master craftswoman. It makes high demands on itself and others, performance is also its motto here. She is fighting for new working and training methods and has even succeeded in building her own swimming pool. They also apply their high standards to Herbert, who, however, is not up to them. He hides Barbara for a long time that his computer center has been rationalized away and that he has to perform an unsatisfactory job. And he has an affair with his secretary, which Barbara learns when she's 7 months pregnant. After the divorce Barbara carries herself with the memory to go away and accept an offer as a swimming trainer. But then she decides to fulfil her obligations in the company and to the people who need her.
