German SummaryArgante entdeckt, daß sich sein Sohn Octave während seiner Abwesenheit mit einem Mädchen namens Hyacinte verehelicht hat. Der Alte dringt auf Scheidung, denn Octave soll die Wahltochter Gerontes heiraten. Argante muß die Vorwürfe Gerontes über sich ergehen lassen, aber der weiß, daß Leander, Gerontes Sohn, heimlich mit dem Mädchen Zerbinette verlobt ist. Da stehen die beiden Alten nun zornig vor den ungeratenen Söhnen und toben. Die Söhne wollen nicht nachgeben, aber sie brauchen Geld. Die schwierige Aufgabe des Geldausleihens und der Versöhnung mit den Vätern übernimmt Scapin für die jungen Männer. Gewitzt haut er die Alten übers Ohr und Geronte sogar mit dem Knüppel übers Kreuz, nachdem er ihn in einen Sack gelockt hat. Da sich zum Schluß herausstellt, daß Hyacinte die Wahltochter des Geronte ist und Zerbinette die von Zigeunern entführte Tochter Argantes, ist alles in schönster Ordnung. Die Familie fällt sich glücklich in die Arme, und Scapin kann sich neuen Streichen zuwenden.

English SummaryArgante discovers that his son Octave has married a girl named Hyacinte during his absence. The old man is getting a divorce, because Octave is to marry Gerontes, the daughter of the electorate. Argante must endure Geronte's accusations, but he knows that Leander, Geronte's son, is secretly engaged to the girl Zerbinette. There the two old men stand now angrily before the unguessed sons and rave. The sons won't give in, but they need money. The difficult task of borrowing money and reconciling with the fathers is taken over by Scapin for the young men. He is smart enough to knock the old men off their ears and Geronte even crosses them with a club after having lured him into a sack. Since in the end it turns out that Hyacinte is the daughter of the Geronte and Zerbinette the daughter of Argantes, who was kidnapped by gypsies, everything is in the best order. The family falls happily into each other's arms, and Scapin can turn to new tricks.
