German Summary1903 in Rajgrod an der russisch-preußischen Grenze. Jan Anskath lebt auf der russischen Seite und schmuggelt zuweilen illegale politische Schriften. Auf der anderen Seite wohnt sein Halbbruder Martin, der für einen dubiosen Herrn Flüchtlinge schmuggelt. Er weiß nicht, daß der Mann den Flüchtlingen das letzte Geld abnimmt und sie dann den zaristischen Behörden ausliefert, ihm geht es nur um seinen Verdienst. Als das Doppelspiel herauskommt, wandelt sich seine Einstellung. Zusammen mit dem Bruder hilft er einem russischen Sozialdemokraten, der zum Parteitag will, über die Grenze.

English Summary1903 in Rajgrod on the Russian-Prussian border. Jan Anskath lives on the Russian side and sometimes smuggles illegal political writings. On the other side lives his half-brother Martin, who smuggles refugees for a dubious man. He does not know that the man takes the last money from the refugees and then hands it over to the tsarist authorities, he only cares about his earnings. When the double-cross comes out, his attitude changes. Together with his brother, he helps a Russian Social Democrat who wants to go to the party conference cross the border.
