German SummaryWerner Holt und Gilbert Wolzow sind Freunde seit der Schulzeit. Halbe Kinder noch, liegen sie im Frühjahr 1945 in einer Stellung im Osten Deutschlands, die sie gegen die anrückende Rote Armee verteidigen sollen. Wolzow hat das Kommando der kleinen Truppe an sich gerissen und befiehlt dem Funker Holt, Verbindung mit dem Regiment herzustellen. Während des Funkens erinnert sich Holt an die entscheidenden Stationen seines Lebens: den Beginn seiner Freundschaft mit Wolzow, die gemeinsame Meldung zum Militär, die Begegnung mit dem Tod beim ersten Einsatz als Flakhelfer, das erotische Erlebnis mit einer SS-Offiziersfrau, das ihn anekelte. Für die humanistische Gesinnung seines Vaters fehlte ihm damals das Verständnis. Langsam jedoch wandelt sich seine Haltung. Beim Einsatz gegen slowakische Partisanen hat er der jungen Milena zur Flucht verholfen. Dann konnte er auch den Schulfreund Gomulka verstehen, der zum "Feind" übergelaufen war. Die russischen Panzer rollen an, können aber noch einmal zurückgeschlagen werden. Als Wolzow einen 16jährigen erschießt, der aus Angst fliehen will, begehrt Holt auf und entwaffnet ihn. Er bringt ein Maschinengewehr in Stellung und mäht ein SS-Durchhaltekommando nieder. Dann verläßt er die Stellung und macht sich auf den Weg zu Gundel, die auf ihn wartet und mit der er ein neues Leben beginnen will.

English SummaryWerner Holt and Gilbert Wolzow have been friends since school. Half of the children are still in a position in eastern Germany in the spring of 1945, which they are to defend against the advancing Red Army. Wolzow has taken over the command of the small troop and orders the radio operator Holt to establish contact with the regiment. During the radio transmission, Holt remembers the decisive stages of his life: the beginning of his friendship with Wolzow, the joint report to the military, the encounter with death during his first deployment as an anti-aircraft gunner, the erotic experience with an SS officer's wife that disgusted him. At that time he lacked the understanding for his father's humanistic attitude. Slowly, however, his attitude changes.
