Shenja, etwa 10, wird von den Eltern zur Großmutter nach Sibirien, in die Station Sime, geschickt. Vorher aber bringt er noch seine Goldfische zurück ins fließende Wasser eines Park-Bächleins. Der Zug ist übervoll, aber gegen Mutters goldenen Ehering verspricht die Zugschaffnerin den Kleinen zu hüten wie ihren Augapfel. Und tatsächlich findet sich ein Plätzchen auf der Plattform, sogar Geige spielen kann er dort, aber als Shenja schläft, versucht ihm ein anderer Junge die Schuhe zu klauen. Eine wilde Verfolgungsjagd durch den Zug beginnt, bei der die ersten Bekanntschaften geschlossen werden, aber dann schenkt Shenja dem anderen großmütig die Schuhe, weil jener barfuß läuft, er aber noch ein anderes Paar bat. Wenig später wird der Zug bombardiert, der "Barfüßige" ist unter den Opfern. Die Zugschaffnerin "besorgt" Shenja die Schuhe zurück - und das war das Falscheste, was sie tun konnte. Weit und voller Unterbrechungen ist der Weg nach Sibirien. Auf einer Station fährt der Zug ohne Shenja weiter. Der Junge gerät in die Gewalt von Gaunern, die ihn zum Dieb ausbilden wollen. Mit einem Mädchen ans der Truppe gelingt Shenja die Flucht. Aber seine Geige ist kaputt, wurde bei einer Schlägerei auf dem Markt zertreten.
Schließlich kommt Shenja doch noch zu seiner Oma, in eine relativ friedliche Umwelt, doch auch hier gehen die jungen Männer an die Front, kommen die Briefe mit den Todesnachrichten, auch Shenjas Vater wird vermisst.

Finally Shenja comes to his grandmother, in a relatively peaceful environment, but here too the young men go to the front, the letters with the news of death come, Shenja's father is also missing.
