German SummaryDie erste große Prosaarbeit Nexös führt auf die Insel Bornholm, im Jahre 1880. Der Steinbruch-Arbeiter Johan Jönsson fristet mit seiner Frau und den Kindern ein armseliges Leben. Mit einem Lotterielos, durch das er sich einen großen Gewinn verspricht, will er der Not entfliehen. Doch es bringt ihm kein Glück. Statt sein bißchen Geld für einen Arzt auszugeben, um sein krankes Kind behandeln zu lassen, verlängert er das Los. Das Kind stirbt, und Johan verfällt, von Gewissensbissen geplagt, dem Alkohol. Nachdem er alles verspielt hat, bringt das Lotterielos einem anderen den Hauptgewinn. Johan begeht Selbstmord, sein Sohn Per hat indessen begriffen, daß Glücksspiel nicht das Mittel ist, das erbärmliche Dasein der Arbeiter zu verändern.

English SummaryNexös' first major prose work led to the island of Bornholm in 1880. The quarry worker Johan Jönsson lived a miserable life with his wife and children. With a lottery ticket, through which he promises himself a great profit, he wants to escape from misery. But it doesn't bring him luck. Instead of spending a little money on a doctor to treat his sick child, he prolongs the lot. The child dies, and Johan, plagued by remorse, falls for alcohol. After he has gambled everything away, the lottery ticket brings the main prize to another player. Johan commits suicide, but his son Per has understood that gambling is not the means to change the miserable lives of the workers.
