Javier, dessen Geliebte zuvor die Freundin des gefürchteten Polizeiministers gewesen ist, heiratet die Tochter des Zeitungsverlegers. Er will "nach oben", will Macht, wird Senator werden. Sein Bruder Dario hingegen bleibt seinen Idealen treu, auch er wird Chefredakteur einer - linken - Zeitung.
English SummaryThe Argüelles family belongs to the richest families in Cuba at the end of the twenties. At the top are the entrepreneur Lucio and the Jesuit padre Rubén, who has a decisive influence on the newspaper "El Universal". All hopes are directed towards the two young Argüelles, the brothers Dario and Javier. They study, they act socialist-revolutionary. But while Dario is really serious and wants to put his revolutionary theories into practice, his brother Javier is so attached to the good life that he tries to walk a path between the fronts. So, before he knows it, he goes from being an anarchist bomb thrower in a posh restaurant to being a partisan of his uncle Rubén, who first launches him as deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper, only to see his nephew ice-coldly pushing him aside to take over power and influence himself. Javier, whose lover was previously the girlfriend of the dreaded police minister, marries the newspaper publisher's daughter. He wants "up," he wants power, he'll be a senator. His brother Dario, on the other hand, remains true to his ideals and becomes editor-in-chief of a left-wing newspaper.
