English SummaryThe old Kraske has become a farmer through the land reform from a poor house owner to a farmer, but he resists the work in the collective. His role model is the big farmer Kimpel. Grandchild Tinko, whom he loves idolatrously, should one day be able to take over a large farm. He's working his ass off for him. When Kraske's son Ernst returns from captivity as a prisoner of war and turns to the new, collaborative work, a break occurs between father and son. Tinko stands between his beloved grandfather and his stranger, the homecomer. He stays with the old Kraske, while Ernst moves in with the resettled Clary. Gradually, however, Tinko realizes - also with the help of the new teacher Kern - that his father is on the right side. He finds his way to him while the old man, who has no understanding, works his way to his death.
