Die Truppe um Stabchef Michail lässt sich in einem kleinen polnischen Dorf nieder, weitab vom Granathagel der Front. Der Kommandeur Viktor hat mithilfe der Hausherrin ein Essen organisiert. Bei dem Essen lernt Michail das Mädchen Zosia kennen und verliebt sich in sie. Der Stabchef jedoch ist schüchtern und trinkt, um seine Hemmungen zu verlieren, ein Glas Alkohol zu viel. English SummaryAfter heavy and lossy fights against the fascists the decimated troop goes into resting position. The troop around Chief of Staff Michail settles in a small Polish village, far away from the hail of grenades of the front. Commander Viktor organized a dinner with the help of the hostess. During the meal Michail meets the girl Zosia and falls in love with her. The chief of staff, however, is shy and drinks a glass of alcohol too much to lose his inhibitions. On the other hand, he writes notices to the relatives of the fallen, a painful duty in which the pictures of the dead comrades are once again bought from him. A firm friendship has developed between the Polish villagers and the Soviet soldiers, crowned by an improvised party in the host's courtyard. The next day, the battalion receives the order to march out. While the chief of staff Michail checks the wagons, he looks for Zosia among the villagers who have come to say goodbye. At the last minute, the girl hurries along and says goodbye to Mikhail.
